Slate Window Sills

Why Smart Contractors Are Switching to Slate Window Sills Every Time

Why are professional contractors moving to slate window sills both internally and externally?

Slate is a triple win.

1. It looks stunning, offering a timeless, premium aesthetic that clients love, boosting perceived property value. Customers and homeowners are willing to pay contractors more for a slate finished sill due to the perceived greater cost allowing you to charge more. On average the perceived cost of a slate sill in comparison to an MDF sill is more than double.

2. We have carried out a cost price analysis for a 1500mmx300mm opening all 25mm in thickness. Please note all costs have been approximated including the slate sill, but we have tried as much as possible to be accurate.

The cost between a slate and an MDF sill is negligible however the perceived cost by homeowners is much higher for the slate. This difference between perceived cost and value is an opportunity for the savvy contractor to maximise profit margins.

3. Slate sills are built to last and nearly maintenance free. Unlike timber, there’s no repainting, no warping—zero maintenance after fitting. It’s a rock-solid investment! Timber sills are recommended to sand and repaint on average every 5 years. If you run the cost of installing and maintaining a timber sill over 10 years, it is of course much MUCH cheaper to install a slate sill, with the difference growing over time.

4. Slate sills will outlast multiple window changes. Timber sills typically last 30-40 years.

If you want a windowsill that holds up in real weather, doesn’t rely on a coating to survive, and won’t drag you into a repeat cycle of sanding and repainting, get in touch and let’s make your next project smarter with slate!
