During the 1950s and 1960s Len Phipps grew a successful roofing contracting business serving the south west. In the 1980s, faced with the challenge of erratic supply of indigenous slate, his son Peter discovered new sources in Spain and Brazil. Good contacts, reliability and regular supplies lead a growing number of local roofing merchants to rely on Peter for their natural slates.

Slate is a superbly durable product that is unaffected by normal extremes of temperature and is highly resistant to acids, alkalis and other chemicals. It retains its colour, even in UV light and is impermeable to water, in addition slate is non-combustible and is compatible with all other building materials making it look fantastic in situ. These characteristics make it ideal as a building material, and more specifically as a covering for roofs and walls, sills and flooring.
